Are you one of the millions of people who will find any excuse to avoid the dentist’s office? Unfortunately, this level of anxiety and fear can be problematic for your oral and overall health. Not only is your avoidance of the dentist increasing your chances for tooth decay and gum disease, but it also puts you at risk for developing health-related conditions associated with various dental problems, such as heart disease and diabetes. At Bellevue Family & Cosmetic Dentistry, our team wants to eliminate the fear by offering nitrous oxide sedation. Our sedation dentist in Bellevue can put you at ease while taking care of your smile. To learn more, contact us to schedule an appointment today.

What is Nitrous Oxide?

Known as “laughing gas,” this odorless gas works to calm your nerves and make you feel as if you are floating. Whether it is a dental cleaning or extensive procedure, this safe and effective method of sedation will leave you completely at ease while continuing to acknowledge any commands or questions by our dental team.

Who Is A Good Candidate for Nitrous Oxide?

In most cases, patients who simply have anxiety or fear of the dentist are candidates for nitrous oxide. The reasons someone might develop this type of anxiety include:

  • A phobia of needles
  • Difficulty being able to control your movement
  • Past dental experiences that proved traumatic
  • Tooth sensitivity
  • Difficulty with numbing agents

Of course, nitrous oxide isn’t only used for cases of dental anxiety. It is beneficial should a patient require sedation for a treatment procedure, no matter how they feel about the dentist’s office. There are situations that can keep a patient from receiving sedation dentistry, which includes:

  • Being pregnant
  • Sinus congestion
  • Certain medications you are currently taking
  • Respiratory disease

It is important that you tell us about any medications you are taking, as this can cause the sedation to be less effective. Your medical history is also important, so make sure you take the time to thoroughly explain any surgeries or treatments you’ve received in the past.

How Does It Work?

The knobs to control nitrous oxide

When you arrive at our office for your treatment or procedure, we will have you wear a small nasal mask. Once we turn on the nitrous oxide, you will begin to inhale and within minutes, you will begin to feel much more relaxed and at ease. Since any feelings of discomfort will be removed, once Dr. Taneja is satisfied that you are comfortable, she will begin her work.

From patients who need to take the edge off for a simple dental cleaning or for those who are preparing to undergo dental implant placement, nitrous oxide provides many benefits, including:

  • No lasting drowsiness
  • Effects wear off almost immediately
  • No need for an escort to and from your dental appointment
  • Allows you to feel completely relaxed while still remaining cognizant
