How Dental Insurance Works

Each dental insurance plan will be unique, but the basics remain the same. In exchange for the payment of a monthly plan premium the insurer will cover a percentage of the cost of your necessary dental care. In most cases, dental benefit plans provide some combination of the following coverage:

  • 100% preventive care covered
  • Minor restorative care around 70%-80% covered
  • Major restorative care around 50%

Orthodontics, oral appliances, dental sedation, and other treatments may be covered by some plans, but we’ll need to review your individual policy and/or apply for preapproval to ensure these benefits are available.

What is the Difference Between Dental & Medical Insurance?

The main difference between dental and medical insurance is which treatments are covered. Dental benefits tend to focus on prevention whereas medical insurance provides the greatest amount of coverage for chronic illnesses and emergencies.

In-Network VS Out of Network Dentistry

The great thing about dental insurance benefits is that they allow you to visit just about any dentist’s office and still receive coverage – whether or not the dental office is in network with your insurance provider. However, there are some differences between visiting an in and out of network dental office.

In-Network Coverage

In-network dental insurance providers have a contract with your insurance provider. Similar to the policy agreement you make with your insurer, our office has agreed to provide covered dental services at a preset price. This means you only have to pay the out of pocket percentage of treatment costs. We are also more familiar with the available annual maximum benefits and covered services for insurers we’re in-network with. We provide in-network coverage for all of the following insurance policies:

  • United Concordia Dental
  • GEHA
  • Guardian
  • Principal
  • Aetna
  • Cigna
  • Delta Dental (WDS)
  • Ameritas
  • MetLife
  • Premera
  • Regence
  • UnitedHealthcare
