Invisalign has taken the world of modern dentistry by storm! Millions of patients have turned towards these incredible aligners to straighten their smiles and boost their confidence—but did you know that Invisalign can also actively mitigate certain bite problems? Keep reading to learn more from your dentist about how Invisalign is sometimes a viable solution to these issues.
How Invisalign Addresses Bite Problems
One of the most popular reasons that people choose Invisalign to correct their orthodontic issues is the incredible amount of discreetness that the trays offer; they’re virtually invisible when they’re being worn! However, these aligners offer much more than subtlety; they’re also able to easily correct minor misalignment, crowding, and spacing issues inside of your mouth.
But the benefits don’t stop there—Invisalign can also be used to address other types of problems, including overbites. Appliances such as the Invisalign Mandibular Advancement, as well as elastic bands, can be used to gradually shift the bottom teeth forward while moving the top ones back, helping to nullify the present overbite. Sometimes these methods can be applied for other types of bite problems including underbites, crossbites, and open bites. It’s important to note that Invisalign isn’t capable of correcting all known bite issues, though. A consultation with your dentist is the only way to determine if the clear aligners are a good option for you!
Important Factors to Keep in Mind
As with most dental treatments, there are certain factors that must be considered when looking into Invisalign, especially when targeting bite issues. The following factors must be considered:
- The patient’s age – If the patient is 12 years old or younger, their jaws are still growing, and they are not a suitable candidate for Invisalign.
- The severity of the bite issues – Invisalign is most effective at addressing mild and minor bite issues, so severe problems usually need to be treated with traditional orthodontics. There might also be prep work that needs to be done prior to you receiving your aligners.
- How well the patient handles treatment – Patients who disregard the 22-hour rule throughout their Invisalign treatment are unlikely to find success; wearing the aligners as instructed is vital.
Invisalign is a clever and capable solution that can do a lot for your smile, especially if you suffer from certain bite issues! If you’re concerned about your bite pattern and think Invisalign might be a suitable solution, speak with your dentist to see if you’re an eligible candidate.
